For all its empty space and arid landscapes, several of Uzbekistan’s cities have thousands of years of history. In fact were once independent city-states at key junctures of the silk road. What remains now are the beautifully preserved “museum cities,” which include Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva. Even though they’re pristine and the buildings are hundreds of years old, people still live and work in these places. It’s pretty amazing. After hot, sweaty slogs through the desert, these cities made great places to rest up for a day or two.
