Luang Prabang: A Break from the Road

After the remote, intensely mountainous route from the Thai/Laos border, Luang Prabang seems like an Oasis in the desert. A beautiful town on the Mekong River, LP is all beautiful sunsets, well-preserved colonial buildings, temples, good coffee, and good food.

We also totally lucked out that my friend from UW, Alicia Akins (see post Luang Prabang: Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre), is living here in a huge traditional Laos house with her two buddies Khahn (from Vietnam), and Lauren (Canada), who work at Joma, a Canadian-owned coffee shop chain headquartered in Singapore, that has a socially sustainable business model. Needless to say, I spent a lot of my time in LP drinking their coffee.

Alicia and her housemates were kind enough to let us crash on their floor and smell up their house for a few days. They all had to work, but we managed to throw some fun into the mix anyway.

Above: Fun posing outside Alicia's awesome house.

The boys manage to cook a meal without blowing up Alicia's kitchen. She was kind enough to pretend it was tasty.

Ice-cream spoon fung shuei.

Excitement regarding salad.

Thanks LP, Alicia, Khahn, and Lauren, for being beautiful and tolerating us for a few days!
